PAUL TAS — ARTIST, INVENTOR, SOUND DESIGNER

Paul Tas is a Dutch multidisciplinary artist,

inventor, educator, and founder of Error Instruments, based in Amsterdam,

the Netherlands. Since the mid-1990s, Tas has worked across painting, sculpture, sound art, installation art, technology, fashion, and experimental musical instrument design, creating a unique practice where art and technology merge into immersive experiences. His early work was influenced by abstract expressionism and the spirit of the Cobra movement, leading to exhibitions in museums and galleries in Amsterdam and internationally. Alongside his paintings, Tas became known for his distinctive wooden robotic sculptures and kinetic artworks, which attracted attention from collectors, galleries, and major international art events. In 2010, Tas founded Error Instruments, a company dedicated to handmade experimental electronic instruments, sound devices, Eurorack modules, and unconventional musical tools. Every instrument is designed and built by hand in Amsterdam. Rather than following traditional musical standards, Error Instruments encourages exploration, unpredictability, and creativity through sound. The name “Error” carries a deeply personal meaning. As a child, Tas struggled with reading and writing. During the rise of the Commodore 64 era in the 1980s, the phrase “Syntax Error” became familiar to many young computer users. Schoolmates used the word “Error” as a nickname to mock him. Instead of rejecting it, Tas transformed the name into a symbol of strength, creativity, and resilience. Today, Error represents a philosophy: embracing imperfections, mistakes, and unexpected outcomes as opportunities for growth and innovation. Throughout his career, Tas has collaborated on projects that connect art, technology, fashion, and sound. His work has contributed to museum installations, educational programs, performance art, and interdisciplinary exhibitions. He has been involved in projects connected to cultural institutions, fashion designers, filmmakers, and artists, creating environments where sound becomes a physical and visual experience. His instruments and sound sculptures have been used by musicians, composers, sound designers, filmmakers, and experimental artists around the world. The distinctive character of Error Instruments has found its way into cinematic productions, contemporary music, industrial music, electronic music, and sound design. The focus has never been on creating conventional instruments, but on inspiring artists to discover new sonic territories. As an educator and workshop leader, Tas has shared his knowledge internationally, presenting workshops, performances, and lectures in cities including Amsterdam, Berlin, London, New York, Shanghai, Beijing, and Tokyo. His educational approach encourages participants to rethink technology, sound, and creativity through hands-on experimentation. A documentary titled “Painting with Sounds” offers an intimate portrait of Paul Tas and the world of Error Instruments. The film explores his artistic journey, his philosophy of embracing mistakes, and his lifelong mission to blur the boundaries between visual art, music, technology, and human imagination. Today, Paul Tas continues to create artworks, installations, instruments, performances, and educational projects that challenge conventional ideas about art and sound. His work stands as a celebration of experimentation, curiosity, and the creative power of transforming errors into opportunities.
